Spartacus by Tom Merrifield is a monumental bronze sculpture that captures the raw power and defiant grace of the legendary Thracian gladiator.
The sculpture stands over three metres high on a large stone plinth. As a result, the plinth grounds the piece and creates a striking contrast to the airborne vitality above. Spartacus appears semi-nude, caught mid leap, suspended between bondage and freedom. Moreover, every line of his body radiates energy. The muscles of his torso flex tightly, his limbs extend in a balletic yet explosive arc, and his head tilts upward with a gaze that seems to defy gravity.
