Reclining Nude on Lounger by Sean Crampton is a small-scale bronze sculpture depicting a female nude in a relaxed, informal pose. The figure lies back comfortably on a lounger with her hands resting behind her head, her knees raised and her feet crossed, creating a natural composition that conveys a strong sense of ease and repose.
Crampton’s treatment of the figure is expressive and assured, capturing the curves, weight and proportions of the reclining body while retaining the distinctive character of a hand-modelled sculpture. The arrangement of the limbs gives the work a gentle sense of movement and rhythm: the raised knees form the centre of the composition, while the crossed feet and arms positioned behind the head reinforce the figure’s relaxed attitude.
The lounger forms an integral part of the sculpture, supporting and framing the figure while providing a contrast to the softer contours of the body. The reclining format also makes the sculpture particularly engaging when viewed from different angles, revealing changing silhouettes and details in the modelling of the bronze.
