Sea Otter Diving by Piers Mason, Marine Grade Stainless Steel, Brass, Kilkenny Slate, Unique, 150cm high by 170cm wide by 50cm deep, Animals and Birds, Nature sculpture
Sea Otter Diving by Piers Mason is a unique marine grade stainless steel, brass, and Kilkenny slate sculpture. It measures 150cm high, 170cm wide, and 50cm deep. The work shows an otter captured mid-dive, sweeping downward as it twists through the water. Mounted on a flat slate base, the figure is suspended in the air with energy and motion.
The otter’s body is crafted from welded steel wires. These wires form a mesh that leaves gaps, allowing light to pass through the figure. This design makes the otter look light and fluid, almost dissolving into the water around it. In contrast, three solid brass reeds rise alongside the animal. They bend slightly as though caught in a current, grounding the composition and reinforcing the sense of flow.
The sculpture balances lightness and solidity. The otter appears playful and strong as it arches downward, while the reeds create rhythm and stability. The open structure of the mesh contrasts with the solid brass, giving depth and movement to the work.
Piers Mason transforms raw materials into a lively vision of nature. The otter feels alive, caught in a moment of motion, while the reeds suggest the world it inhabits. Sea Otter Diving celebrates grace, strength, and the beauty of natural movement.
