Othello by Lucy Kinsella, Polychromed Resin, Edition of 9, 188cm high, 43cm wide, 23cm deep, Men, Performing Arts sculpture
Othello by Lucy Kinsella immediately commands attention with its striking presence and expressive realism. This polychromed resin sculpture, part of an edition of 9, measures 188 centimetres high, 43 centimetres wide, and 23 centimetres deep. The piece presents a bald male head with a neutral expression, and consequently conveys both stillness and introspection, inviting viewers to engage with the subtleties of character, emotion, and human presence.
Kinsella emphasizes lifelike detail through meticulous modelling and careful coloration. Moreover, the polychromed surface enhances realism, capturing nuanced skin tones, subtle shifts in texture, and the natural variation of light across the face. Meanwhile, the calm, neutral expression creates a quiet intensity, encouraging viewers to reflect on the inner life of the figure rather than relying on overt gesture or expression. The elongated scale of the sculpture further amplifies its impact, transforming a simple portrait into a monumental encounter with presence and form.
As observers move around Othello, additional qualities emerge. The smooth curvature of the skull, the defined planes of the cheekbones, and the subtle lines around the eyes reveal both character and vulnerability. Furthermore, the careful balance between abstraction and realism allows the figure to resonate universally, inviting reflection on identity, humanity, and theatrical presence.
Ultimately, Othello transforms polychromed resin into a compelling study of the human face and spirit. Through careful attention to proportion, colour, and surface, Kinsella captures both the stillness and latent intensity of her subject, creating a sculpture that engages viewers visually, emotionally, and intellectually, evoking the depth and complexity of the character it represents.
