Girl with Long Hair by John Lord is a 170 cm high, 70 cm wide, and 190 cm deep welded steel sculpture. The piece depicts a bust of a woman with flowing hair, capturing both form and motion through metal.
The bust rises to just below the breasts, showing the upper torso and shoulders. Her face carries a neutral, calm expression. The focus, however, is her long, wiry hair. Thin wires sprout from her head and extend far past her body. They twist, wind, and overlap, forming a dynamic, flowing mass. Small welded metal planes punctuate the hair, giving texture and visual rhythm.
Lord combines smooth surfaces with rougher details. The welding marks, cuts, and holes remain visible, adding industrial character. The sculpture mixes brown steel with cream-painted sections, creating subtle contrast and depth. This interplay of colors and textures emphasizes both structure and delicacy.
The composition draws the viewer’s eye from the face down through the cascading hair. The twisting wires suggest movement, almost like wind caught mid-flow. Despite the abstracted technique, the figure remains recognizably human and expressive.
Overall, the sculpture balances strength and grace. The solid planes of the bust anchor the figure, while the wiry hair extends it into space. Lord’s work transforms simple metal into an elegant, kinetic presence, where texture, color, and form combine to evoke both fragility and resilience.

The Sculpture Park will be in contact after purchase to arrange a delivery date. Delivery will require at least 1 person, which will be provided by The Sculpture Park wherever possible. We can provide an installation service upon request, email Sian at sian@thesculpturepark.com to discuss details. Delivery and installation will be provided by The Sculpture Park for mainland Great Britain, excluding the Channel Islands, Scottish Highlands and Republic of Ireland. A mainland courier company will handle any onward shipping.
