Bulls Head by Martin Lowe, Steel, Unique, Animals and Birds, Geometric sculpture
Bulls Head by Martin Lowe is a unique abstract steel sculpture, under one metre in size. The piece reinterprets a bull’s head using chains, wires, and steel rods, combining industrial materials with dynamic form.
Thin steel poles interlock and weave together to form the head. Gaps remain between the rods, allowing light to pass through and creating shifting shadows. Despite its abstraction, the bull’s contours are clear. The eyes, nose, and ears are defined by the careful arrangement of poles, giving the sculpture structure and recognisable form.
At the top, chains coil and intertwine to create the horns and crown. The horns point outward and upward, conveying strength and energy. Two small beads mark the eyes, focusing attention and adding subtle detail. The use of chains and wires introduces texture and movement, making the sculpture feel alive despite its minimal framework.
Lowe preserves the natural brown tones of the steel, allowing the warmth of the metal to complement the raw, industrial aesthetic. The piece mounts easily to a wall, giving it a commanding presence while keeping it accessible in scale.
Bulls Head balances abstraction with recognisable anatomy. The interplay of rods, gaps, and chains creates rhythm and tension. Shadows shift as the viewer moves around it, enhancing its sense of depth and energy. The sculpture captures the spirit of the bull, strength, defiance, and vitality, while showcasing Lowe’s skill in transforming raw materials into expressive form.
