Pickaxe Stack
Iron and Steel, Enamel
Unique , 240 cm high by 190 cm wide by 190 cm deep
Pickaxe Stack is a striking and dynamic sculpture that transforms a simple tool into a visual narrative of labor and motion. Crafted from iron and steel with vivid enamel finishes, the piece presents multiple brightly coloured pickaxes layered in succession, each one slightly offset from the next. This arrangement captures the essence of time-lapse photography, freezing the motion of a pickaxe striking the ground. The overlapping forms create a rhythm and energy that seems almost kinetic, even though the sculpture itself is stationary.
From different angles, the work reveals new relationships between colour, shape, and gesture. The vivid enamel surfaces contrast with the raw industrial strength of iron and steel, emphasizing both the beauty and utility of the tool. Each pickaxe appears suspended mid-action, suggesting the repetitive yet purposeful effort of workmen at labour. The careful layering and spacing give the impression of momentum and impact, as if the viewer can almost hear the rhythmic thud of pick meeting earth.
Moreover, the sculpture’s substantial size – over two meters tall and wide – commands attention, inviting viewers to walk around and examine the interplay of shapes from multiple perspectives. Beyond its visual spectacle, Pickaxe Stack celebrates the labour and craftsmanship behind manual work, elevating everyday tools into a monument of human effort and persistence. It blends architectural structure, kinetic suggestion, and bold colour to create a composition that is simultaneously abstract, figurative, and profoundly expressive.
