‘Bud’ 1997 by Peter Blunsden, Metal, 290cm high, 170cm wide, 160cm deep. Unique

Bud (1997) by Peter Blunsden is a commanding abstract sculpture that transforms industrial metals into a striking exploration of form, colour, and rhythm. Standing 290 centimeters high, 170 centimeters wide, and 160 centimeters deep, the work consists of a cluster of green metal tubes arranged in a complex, almost organic formation. Blunsden captures both strength and fluidity, turning rigid industrial materials into a composition that feels alive and dynamic.

The green painted tubes immediately draw attention, offering a bold contrast to the raw industrial character of the metal. Blunsden positions the tubes to suggest growth and expansion, as if the sculpture were sprouting like a mechanical plant. Vertical and diagonal lines intersect throughout the piece, creating tension and movement. These lines invite viewers to move around the sculpture, experiencing its shifting perspectives and discovering new angles with every step.

Repetition of the cylindrical forms establishes a rhythmic flow, while variations in length and angle introduce unpredictability and visual intrigue. Light interacts with the painted surfaces, casting shifting shadows that enhance depth and dimensionality. The work balances industrial precision with organic energy, merging the mechanical quality of metal with the vitality of natural growth.

Ultimately, Bud showcases Blunsden’s skill in transforming familiar materials into expressive abstract art. Through deliberate composition, vibrant color, and inventive arrangement of tubes, he creates a sculpture that feels both engineered and alive. The piece encourages active engagement, offering viewers a dynamic encounter with industrial form reimagined as vibrant, growing energy.
