House by Ally Wallace, Painted Steel, Unique, 500cm wide, Architecture sculpture,

Ally Wallace’s House is a striking painted steel sculpture that transforms a simple silhouette into a bold architectural statement. Measuring five meters wide, the piece takes the form of a lime-green house, reduced to its essential outline. Rather than solid walls or surfaces, Wallace uses slender steel poles to sketch the shape of the building, giving it the appearance of a three-dimensional drawing floating in space.

Based on a photograph of a 1950’s Modernist house ‘floating’ in a rural setting. By stripping the structure down to its frame, Wallace emphasizes both memory and perception, recalling how we often reduce familiar places to their simplest shapes. The lime-green paint intensifies this effect, making the form vivid and playful while ensuring it stands out against natural or urban backdrops.

Despite its minimal form, House feels expansive. The open frame allows light and shadow to flow through it, constantly changing the viewer’s experience depending on time of day and angle of approach. Moreover, its raised position enhances the sense of lightness, as if the structure truly floats above the ground. Strong brackets and a concrete foundation support the sculpture from behind, but these supports remain discreet, allowing the illusion to dominate.

Ultimately, House balances nostalgia with modern abstraction. It invites viewers to reflect on home, memory, and the way simple forms can carry deep cultural weight.
