Griffin by John Ravera, Bronze, Unique, Signed and dated 1981, 110cm high (175cm high with plinth) by 84cm wide by 40cm deep, Animals and Birds, Mythology sculpture, Dragon, Bird, Animal
Griffin by John Ravera is a striking bronze sculpture created in 1981, signed and unique in form. Standing 110 cm high, or 175 cm with its limestone plinth, the piece commands attention through scale and presence. The work captures the mythical griffin mid-stride, walking upright on its back legs with wings raised high and spread wide. Its front talons stretch forward in a gesture that feels both powerful and threatening, while its beak opens as if to release a cry. The creature’s gaze fixes directly ahead, unwavering and bold.
On its head, two small feathered ears rise up, adding to the character of this hybrid beast. The stylisation is deliberate: feathers, clumps of fur, and bodily forms are not carved delicately but instead boldly, giving the griffin strong personality and energy. Every surface carries weight and intention, highlighting its mythical strength.
The bronze material amplifies the drama, its patina catching light to emphasize curves and textures. Meanwhile, the limestone plinth grounds the sculpture, creating contrast between the smooth, pale stone and the richly detailed bronze. The plinth does not merely support the creature; it elevates it, giving the impression that the griffin towers above, poised to defend or attack.
Ravera’s Griffin blends mythology with stylised realism, embodying strength, vigilance, and movement. It feels both ancient and modern, timeless in its symbolic presence.
