Wise Owl by Munyaradzi Jeche, Springstone, Unique, 155cm high, 56cm wide, 36cm deep, Abstract, Black, Sculpture
Wise Owl by Munyaradzi Jeche is a unique Shona springstone sculpture, measuring 155cm high, 56cm wide, and 36cm deep. Carved from deep black springstone, the piece presents a bold abstract form that twists and curves in a fluid motion. Although titled Wise Owl, the sculpture leans away from literal representation. Instead, it captures the essence of the owl through symbolic form, its wisdom, mystery, and quiet strength.
The flowing lines rise upward, folding and looping back on themselves, suggesting feathers, movement, or perhaps the silhouette of a bird in watchful stillness. Its polished surface reflects light in sweeping arcs, while subtle textural shifts in the stone create moments of visual pause.
Jeche balances mass and openness beautifully. Some areas feel solid and grounded, while others stretch outward, offering space and rhythm. The form appears both anchored and alive, almost as if it could lift into the air at any moment.
Despite its abstraction, Wise Owl feels deeply connected to the natural world. Its title guides interpretation, inviting viewers to see wisdom and grace in the sculpture’s elegant shape. As with much Shona sculpture, the power lies in suggestion, not definition. The result is a contemplative, powerful form that speaks quietly but confidently from every angle.
