Wave by Martyn Barratt, Kiln Formed Glass

Wave by Martyn Barratt, Kiln Formed Glass, Unique, 93cm high, 55cm wide, 20cm deep

This piece is a striking kiln formed blue glass sculpture that depicts a free standing wave.

Wave has an elegant, dynamic form resembling a free-standing wave and capturing the fluidity and movement of water using glass. The sculpture’s rich blue color evokes the natural hues of the sea, and the way the glass is shaped gives the impression of a wave frozen in time, showcasing Barratt’s mastery in kiln-forming techniques.

Kiln forming is a method of shaping glass by heating it in a kiln, often allowing for intricate textures and designs. Barratt’s use of this technique in Wave creates a sense of motion, with the smooth curves and undulating surface of the sculpture adding to its feeling of fluidity and energy.

Wave is a piece that stands out not just because of its size or the material, but because of the way it captures a natural phenomenon—like a wave—making it both visually striking and conceptually powerful.
