William Black, (British, 20th century), Upright Form, 1965, patinated copper alloy sculpture, signed, titled and dated to underside, 42cm high by 13cm wide by 9cm deep, Abstract Sculpture

Upright Form (1965) by William Black, a British sculptor of the 20th century, is a striking abstract sculpture in patinated copper alloy. The work stands 42cm high and presents a slender yet assertive vertical presence. Black builds the form from a deliberate mix of metal rods, strips, and flat planes, combining them into a carefully balanced composition.

At the top, a circular element anchors the sculpture visually and draws the eye upward. Below it, a broad, curved plane forms the main body, giving the piece weight and a sense of containment. In contrast, thin leg-like supports extend downward, lifting the form and creating tension between solidity and delicacy. Together, these elements suggest a figure-like stance without becoming figurative.

Black smooths the metal to remove harsh edges, yet he allows welding marks and joins to remain visible. As a result, the sculpture retains an honest, constructed character. These traces of making add rhythm and texture across the surface. Meanwhile, the patination introduces rich turquoise tones, which shift subtly with the light and emphasise the sculpture’s contours.

Signed, titled, and dated to the underside, Upright Form reflects Black’s interest in balance, structure, and abstraction. The piece feels architectural yet organic, combining industrial materials with an elegant, poised silhouette.
