William Black

Early Life
William Black lived during the second half of the 20th century. Originally trained and working as an architect, he later inherited money in the 1950s, which allowed him to leave his profession and relocate to St Ives, Cornwall.

Education
He was a self-taught artist but received guidance and lessons from John Tunnard, whose influence shaped his artistic development.

Career
Black worked as both a painter and sculptor. After moving to St Ives, he became associated with the avant-garde art movement developing in the area and drew inspiration from contemporaneous artists of the St Ives School.

Materials
His sculptures were often made from copper, while his paintings were primarily executed in ink and wash.

Style & Subject
His work reflects key elements of the St Ives School, including still life and landscapes that explore the boundary between realism and abstraction. His compositions are bold yet fluid, featuring distinctive colour palettes.

He also incorporated symbolism and mythical creatures, expressing both an interest in the natural world and an imaginative inner vision.
