Unite by Tinei Mashaya, Springstone, Stone, Signed, Unique, 190cm high by 90cm wide by 40cm deep, Tribal, Abstract, Body sculpture
“Unite” by Tinei Mashaya stands as a powerful example of contemporary Shona sculpture, carved from rich, dark Springstone and signed as a unique work. Mashaya shapes the female figure with confident, deliberate strokes, giving the stone both weight and grace. The sculpture rises to 190 centimeters, yet it conveys an intimate, inward focus. The woman sits with her legs crossed, her hands clasped gently before her. As her head tilts downward and her eyes close, she settles into a state of deep calm.
From the first glance, the pose radiates unity, between body and spirit, stillness and strength. Mashaya emphasizes the smooth curves of the torso and limbs, allowing the polished surfaces to catch the light and guide the viewer’s attention. Meanwhile, the rougher textures around the base and edges create a dynamic contrast that strengthens the sculpture’s tribal and abstract character. Because of this interplay, the piece feels both grounded in tradition and boldly contemporary.
Furthermore, the figure’s meditative posture invites viewers to pause and engage emotionally. Her closed eyes suggest reflection rather than withdrawal, encouraging a sense of shared humanity. As one circles the sculpture, subtle shifts in silhouette and shadow reveal new interpretations: resilience from one angle, vulnerability from another. These transitions highlight Mashaya’s ability to carve stone with sensitivity while still honouring the material’s natural power.
