Two Worlds by Martyn Barratt, Clipsham Stone, Unique, 121cm high by 192cm wide by 22cm deep, Outer Space, Landscape sculpture

Two Worlds by Martyn Barratt immediately captivates with its minimalist yet thought provoking form. This unique Clipsham stone sculpture, measuring 121 centimetres high, 192 centimetres wide, and 22 centimetres deep, presents a flat slab punctuated by two circular forms, one concave and one convex, and consequently invites contemplation of contrast, duality, and spatial perception. At first glance, the juxtaposition of the opposing shapes evokes notions of balance, tension, and the interaction between opposing forces, drawing the viewer into a meditative exploration of form.

Barratt emphasizes simplicity and precision to create maximum visual impact. Moreover, the smooth curvature of the concave circle contrasts with the outward push of the convex form, generating a sense of movement and energy across the otherwise flat surface. Meanwhile, the natural tones and textures of Clipsham stone lend warmth and subtle variation, grounding the abstract concept in material reality. The piece’s horizontal orientation encourages viewers to engage with it both from a distance and up close, allowing the circles to shift in perception as one moves along the width of the sculpture.

As observers study Two Worlds, additional qualities emerge. The tension between inward and outward forms creates a dialogue of depth and perspective, while the minimalist design encourages reflection on cosmic or natural dualities. Furthermore, the precise carving and polished surfaces enhance the play of light and shadow, subtly altering the sculpture’s appearance throughout the day.

Ultimately, Two Worlds transforms a simple slab of stone into a meditation on form, space, and contrast. Through Barratt’s careful manipulation of concave and convex shapes, the sculpture invites viewers to engage visually and conceptually, experiencing a harmonious interplay between two distinct yet interconnected worlds.
