Vessel ’79 by Daphne Powell, Bronze, Editon of 5, 105cms high by 75cms wide by 35cms deep
Vessel by Daphne Powell is an abstract bronze sculpture standing 105 cm high, with a width of 75 cm and depth of 35 cm. This piece originated as a pottery vase, created by Daphne for her own enjoyment. Sculpture Park owner Eddie Powelll was so taken by the piece, that he had it scaled up and cast in bronze, as a gift to Daphne.
This unique interpretation of a pottery vessel, balances form and texture. The piece consists of a distinct top and bottom section, with the bottom slightly larger than the top, creating a sense of proportion and balance.
The surface is intentionally uneven, featuring lumps, grooves, and angled cuts that catch the light and create visual interest. These irregularities enhance the tactile quality of the bronze, adding depth and character to the piece.
Powell emphasizes the sculptural qualities of the vessel over functional accuracy. The indentations and textural details encourage close inspection, revealing subtle shifts in surface and contour. The abstracted form evokes both the solidity of traditional pottery and the creative freedom of contemporary sculpture.
Vessel transforms bronze into a study of shape, balance, and texture. Its bold form, combined with intricate surface detailing, gives the piece both strength and subtlety. The sculpture commands attention while maintaining an elegant simplicity, inviting viewers to explore its form, material, and presence in any space.
