The Flame by Innocent Nyashenga, Springstone, Unique, 87cm high, 68cm wide, 11cm deep, Love, Shona, Black, Abstract sculpture
The Flame by Innocent Nyashenga is a Shona springstone sculpture measuring 87cm high, 68cm wide, and 11cm deep. The work takes the form of an abstract flame, carved with smooth precision from richly textured stone. Its design is compact yet dynamic, capturing movement within a contained space.
The sculpture curves gently into an open circular shape. Two curves swoop in from the open area, connecting the piece together into one solid shape. This interplay of open and closed space gives the piece a sense of balance while suggesting upward motion, like a flame caught in mid-rise. The form feels alive, shifting between solidity and air.
Nyashenga embraces simplicity in line and structure. The flame has no unnecessary detail, instead relying on its elegant curves and polished surfaces to express energy. The smooth finish contrasts with the natural grain of the springstone, adding depth and subtle variation across the form. The stone’s surface reflects light differently as one moves around it, enhancing the sense of motion.
Though modest in scale, The Flame radiates presence. It symbolizes strength, continuity, and transformation while remaining rooted in organic form. The open centre draws the eye inward, while the flowing lines guide it back upward. This rhythm creates both calm and vitality, a harmony between stability and movement.
The result is a sculpture that feels timeless, both minimal and expressive, grounded yet full of energy.
