Remnant I by Lee Odishow, Cast Iron, Edition Unique, 150cm high by 180cm wide by 80cm deep, sculpture
Remnant I by Lee Odishow is a unique cast iron sculpture that commands attention through its enigmatic form and industrial presence. Measuring 150 cm high, 180 cm wide, and 80 cm deep, the sculpture takes the shape of a large, rounded brown form, part bean, part machine relic.
Rather than appearing static, the sculpture suggests history and motion. Its surface, solid and weathered, resembles a long-lost mechanical object. One side features a round porthole containing a single ball, offering a moment of curiosity and depth. This detail draws the viewer in, hinting at an unknown inner function or story. On the opposite end, a bold yellow band interrupts the dark, rust-toned iron, adding contrast.
Odishow crafts this piece with deliberate ambiguity. The form feels both natural and engineered. It could be a fragment from a ship, a pod from another era, or something entirely imagined. The smooth, curved lines soften the heaviness of the cast iron, while the industrial elements anchor the work in a sense of forgotten purpose.
The sculpture was made by the artist by first creating a chip board frame covered in clingfilm, scrim and plaster. This is then is used to make a sand mould for each panel.
As viewers move around Remnant I, they encounter new angles and associations. It resists a single interpretation, instead offering layers of meaning tied to memory, decay, and time. Ideal for outdoor or large-scale indoor display, the sculpture invites reflection and wonder, holding space between object and artefact, presence and absence.
