Mermaid by Henry Chingonda is a unique Shona stone sculpture measuring 127 cm high, 38 cm wide, and 18 cm deep. The work presents a striking abstraction of the mermaid form, reduced to its most essential elements: a head and a long, curving tail. The figure’s body disappears into simplicity, allowing the sinuous arc of the tail to dominate. It sweeps upward with elegance, curling past the head and fanning outward into finely carved fins that suggest movement and grace.
Chingonda uses the natural qualities of the stone to give depth and life to the figure. The smooth surfaces catch the light, emphasizing the curve of the tail, while the subtle textures add weight and presence. The mermaid’s head is understated, yet its quiet poise balances the dramatic motion of the form above.
The sculpture speaks in contrasts: restraint and flourish, simplicity and intricacy, stability and upward flow. While reduced to an abstracted essence, the piece carries the spirit of myth. The Sculpture Park will be in contact after purchase to arrange a delivery date. Delivery will require at least 1 person, which will be provided by The Sculpture Park wherever possible. We can provide an installation service upon request, email Sian at sian@thesculpturepark.com to discuss details. Delivery and installation will be provided by The Sculpture Park for mainland Great Britain, excluding the Channel Islands, Scottish Highlands and Republic of Ireland. A mainland courier company will handle any onward shipping.
