Head Man by Taylor Nkomo, Springstone, White Opal and Verdite Stone, Unique, 49cm high by 21cm wide by 11cm deep, Body, Figurative, Man, Male sculpture
Head Man by Taylor Nkomo is a unique Shona stone sculpture crafted from a striking combination of springstone, white opal, and verdite. Measuring 49 cm high, 21 cm wide, and 11 cm deep, the piece presents an abstract interpretation of a human face and torso, rich in contrast and layered meaning.
The face stands out immediately. It’s divided vertically into two halves: one light, the other dark. The darker side features a bold inlay of stone strips, blending verdite, springstone, and white opal. This interplay of materials adds texture, rhythm, and visual depth. The lighter half, smooth and unembellished, balances the composition with calm simplicity.
Beneath the face, the torso is minimal and stylised. Clean, geometric lines suggest form without detail. This subtle shaping directs focus back to the complexity of the head. Nkomo’s decision to contrast detail with restraint creates a dynamic tension that invites closer inspection.
Moreover, the materials themselves carry symbolic weight. The use of different stones may represent duality, light and dark, complexity and clarity, identity and transformation. The abstract form doesn’t dictate a narrative, but instead opens space for reflection.
Head Man is both visually bold and conceptually thoughtful. Through material contrast and careful design, Nkomo explores individuality, balance, and the many layers that shape the human experience.
