Taylor Nkomo
BORN:
Taylor was born in 1953 in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.
EDUCATION:
He studied at the Mzilikazi and Craft Center in Bulawayo from 1970 to 1973 at the polytechnic college in his hometown, afterwards worked as a graphic artist at the National Gallery in Harare and finally started sculpting in 1977
CAREER:
He is well known for being a fabric painter, paint maker and a sculptor.
AWARDS:
Taylor has received numerous awards for his works; his sculptures, textiles and paintings have been exhibited worldwide

SUBJECTS OF WORK:
Taylor’s work pays tribute to the diverse sculptural traditions of the African continent while simultaneously reaffirming a powerful and distinctive signature. It is described as elegant and striking, usually based on rural life showing how people endure every day tasks and how they survive. Taylor is inspired by the environment. In some of his works he focuses on the spirituality of nature and on others he describes the central meaning of family ties within the Zimbabwean society. Often he sketches his ideas on paper and then transposes the drawings into stone. He is considered an icon in the realm of Zimbabwean stone sculpture.
