First Dance by Tendai Chipiri, Springstone, Unique, 205cm high by 66cm wide by 64cm deep, Figurative, Music, Performing Arts sculpture
First Dance by Tendai Chipiri stands 205 cm high, 66 cm wide, and 64 cm deep. This Shona Springstone sculpture presents a pair of abstract figures captured mid-dance. Their forms curve, twist, and loop around each other, creating a dynamic sense of movement. Two head shapes are clearly visible, facing each other, while their arms stretch outward and connect in a flowing loop, uniting the figures in motion.
Chipiri abstracts the bodies, simplifying limbs and torsos into continuous, flowing shapes. Despite the abstraction, the dance is immediately readable. The figures lean forward, caught in a moment of shared rhythm and energy. The curves of the stone give the piece a sense of fluidity, almost as though the dancers are suspended in motion.
The sculpture’s surface is largely polished to a deep black finish, which emphasizes the elegance of the forms and reflects light softly. Small sections of unpolished stone are left visible, providing a subtle contrast and revealing the material’s natural origins. This balance between smooth polish and raw texture enhances the organic quality of the work, reinforcing the connection between form, material, and movement.
First Dance captures both intimacy and vitality. Through the looping, intertwining shapes, Chipiri conveys connection, rhythm, and harmony. The figures seem alive, their abstracted forms bending and twisting as if responding to an unseen music. The piece celebrates motion, elegance, and the tactile beauty of Springstone.
