De Stijl by Martyn Barratt, Kiln Formed Glass, Unique, Signed, 123cm high by 114cm wide by 32cm deep, Abstract sculpture
De Stijl by Martyn Barratt is a unique kiln-formed glass sculpture standing 123 cm high, 114 cm wide, and 32 cm deep. The piece presents an abstract square, tilted to rest on one corner, which immediately creates a sense of movement and dynamic balance. Its angled position draws the eye upward and across the composition, inviting exploration from multiple viewpoints.
The sculpture consists of rectangular strips of coloured glass. Each strip contains lines of a single hue, yellow, blue, red, or white, producing rhythm and contrast throughout the square. The strips start wider at the outer edges and progressively shorten toward the centre, guiding the viewer’s gaze inward. This gradual reduction adds depth and reinforces the geometric harmony of the work.
Light interacts vividly with the kiln-formed glass, enhancing transparency, colour, and reflection. As viewers move around the piece, subtle changes in angle create shifting highlights, which animate the square and intensify its sense of motion. The cornered display further amplifies this effect, making the sculpture appear almost suspended in space.
De Stijl celebrates colour, rhythm, and structure. By combining precise geometry with dynamic light effects, Barratt transforms simple materials into a visually engaging and conceptually rich composition. The interplay between diminishing strips, bold colours, and angled positioning encourages viewers to explore various parts of the piece. Such as perspective, spatial relationships, and the interaction of light and form. The result is a sculpture that captivates, challenges, and rewards attention from every angle.
