Dancing in The Wind by Boteka, Opal Stone, Unique, 115cm high by 64cm wide by 34cm deep, Portraits sculpture
Dancing in The Wind by Boteka is a 115 cm high, 64 cm wide, and 34 cm deep opal stone sculpture that captures the essence of movement within a still form. The piece presents an abstract Shona portrait carved directly from a substantial, largely untouched block of stone. The artist keeps the natural character of the rock visible, shaping only what is necessary to reveal the figure within it.
The face appears in side profile, flattened and elongated as it tilts gently downward. This simple yet intentional gesture gives the figure a reflective, almost meditative presence. From the top of the head, the hair sweeps upward and back, fanning out as if caught in a strong gust of wind. Etched lines cut into the stone mark the individual strands, adding rhythm and direction to the composition. These incised details give the piece an expressive energy, guiding the viewer’s eye through the flow of the form.
While the sculpture carries a carved definition, Boteka preserves much of the stone’s rugged surface. The texture remains slightly coarse, allowing the natural grain and colour variations of the opal stone to stand out. Only the essential contours, such as the outline of the face and the sweeping lines of the hair, are flattened and clarified. This balance between raw surface and deliberate shaping strengthens the artwork’s organic feel.
Overall, the sculpture blends abstraction, natural material, and subtle movement into a unified and emotive portrait.
