Blooming by Sylvester Samanyanga, Serpentine stone, Unique, 48cm high, 35cm wide, 18cm deep
Blooming by Sylvester Samanyanga is an elegant Shona Serpentine stone sculpture that explores growth, movement and transformation through a flowing abstract form. Measuring 48 cm high, 35 cm wide and 18 cm deep, this unique sculpture rises organically from a flat base, developing into a network of curling strands that evoke the unfolding energy suggested by its title.
Beginning with a grounded foundation, the form sweeps upwards before separating into a few individual strands. Each follows its own path, curving and bending through the composition while maintaining a clear relationship with the forms around it. Consequently, the sculpture creates a natural upward rhythm, drawing the eye from its solid base towards the increasingly open structure above.
Moreover, some strands reconnect as they move through the sculpture, forming enclosed loops and rounded openings. Others remain separate, allowing their ends to extend freely into the surrounding space. This combination of connection and separation gives Blooming a sense of continuous development, much like new growth gradually opening and expanding outwards.
Negative space also plays an important role within the design. Light passes between the curling forms, emphasising their individual contours while adding depth to the overall composition. As a result, the sculpture reveals changing relationships between solid stone and open space when viewed from different angles.
Furthermore, the natural qualities of Serpentine stone complement Samanyanga’s organic approach, balancing the material’s solidity with the apparent flexibility of the flowing design.
Ultimately, Blooming transforms stone into a graceful expression of growth and unfolding movement. As a unique Sylvester Samanyanga sculpture, it combines contemporary abstraction with the distinctive craftsmanship of Zimbabwean Shona stone carving, creating an engaging addition to a modern interior, gallery or collection of contemporary African sculpture.
