Sylvester Samanyanga

Born
Sylvester Samanyanga was born on 27 June 1986 in Chinhoyi, Zimbabwe.

Early Life
From a young age, he showed an interest in sculpting, moulding figures from mud and clay. He was influenced by his father Kennedy Samanyanga, a second generation Shona sculptor. He spent weekends and school holidays assisting him by sanding and polishing sculptures.

Education
Sylvester attended both primary and secondary school in Kuwadzana, completing his O Levels before pursuing sculpture as a career.

Career
After finishing his schooling, Samanyanga committed to sculpting professionally. By 2003, he had begun creating his own works and joined the Sanganayi Art Group in Guruve. His sculptures have since been sold internationally, including in the United Kingdom, China, Canada, and across Europe. He is recognised as a contemporary Zimbabwean sculptor and a member of the third generation of Shona stone artists.

Materials
He works primarily with stone, favouring materials such as Springstone, Opal, Cobalt, and various types of Serpentine. His process involves the use of hand tools, including a hammer, punch, diamond rasp, chasing hammer, and chisel.

Style & Subject
Sylvester’s work is characterised by abstract and expressive forms within the Shona stone-carving tradition.

His work was displayed in the summer 2025 Spirit in Stone exhibition at The Sculpture Park.
