Richard Jack
Born
Richard Jack was born in 1949 in Harare, Zimbabwe.
Early Life
He was the son of an architect and a nurse, growing up in an environment that combined structure, care, and creativity, elements that would later inform his artistic outlook.
Career
Jack began his artistic career in South Africa in 1975, producing paintings and sculptures shaped by the socio-political climate of apartheid. In 1981, he returned to a newly independent Zimbabwe, where he worked alongside prominent local sculptors and developed his practice further.
He exhibited regularly both across Southern Africa and internationally, and participated in workshops in Zimbabwe, Botswana, Germany, Denmark, and Finland.
In 2002, due to political unrest and economic uncertainty in Zimbabwe, he relocated with his family to Farnham in the United Kingdom, where he continues to live and work. He has received commissions for both public and private sculptures in the UK, Denmark, Germany, and Zimbabwe.
Materials
Jack has worked extensively with wood, stone, and steel, often combining these materials in mixed media sculptures.

His work is generally figurative, interwoven with abstract elements. Drawing inspiration from his experiences in both Africa and the UK, his sculptures explore themes of memory, change, and human experience.
He emphasizes an intuitive, expressive approach rather than adherence to formal theories or trends, focusing instead on life, light, and form—often exploring ideas of balance, tension, suspension, and displacement. His work reflects both personal and universal themes, shaped by environmental and emotional influences.
