Claire Trenchard is a British contemporary sculptor.
EARLY LIFE:
She developed an early affinity for animals and the natural world, which became a lasting source of inspiration for her sculptural work. Her interest in observing movement and character from life continues to inform her expressive approach.
LIVES:
She is based in West Dorset, England.
EDUCATION:
Claire studied at Chelsea School of Art, graduating with a BA in Fine Art in 1978, where she established the foundations of her sculptural practice.
CAREER:
Following her education, Claire built a career as a sculptor known for her distinctive animal and figurative works. Her practice centres on modelling directly from life, allowing her to capture the individuality, movement, and spirit of her subjects. Her work has been widely exhibited and collected.
MATERIALS:
Her sculptures are modelled from life in clay, plaster, or wax, and are cast in bronze and bronze resin, enabling both detailed surface work and durability.
STYLE AND SUBJECTS:
Claire’s work focuses on table top and life size sculptures of wild and domestic animals, as well as imaginative compositions featuring dancing, part human hybrid figures. Her style is expressive and characterful, often emphasising movement, gesture, and personality.
AWARDS AND EXHIBITIONS:
Claire has exhibited at the ICA in London and with the Society of Portrait Sculptors. Her work continues to be shown widely across the West Country of England, where it has gained a strong following among collectors.
