St Peter & St Paul (1988) by James Butler (1932-2003), Bronze, Limited Edition, 57cm high by 50cm wide by 23cm deep, Body, People, Religion sculpture

St Peter & St Paul (1988) by James Butler (1932–2003) is a refined and symbolic bronze sculpture. Measuring 57cm high by 50cm wide and 23cm deep and cast in a limited edition. This piece captures the powerful presence and enduring legacy of two of Christianity’s most iconic saints.

In this stylized yet highly expressive composition, the two figures sit closely side by side. St Paul, distinguished by the sword and book he holds, represents the forceful voice of doctrine and the written word. The sword signifies both his martyrdom and his role in defending the faith, while the book reflects his theological writings. St Peter, holding a key and a model of a church, symbolizes spiritual authority and the foundation of the Church. The key refers to Christ’s words giving Peter the “keys to the kingdom of heaven,” and the church structure underlines his role as the first pope.

The sculpture’s forms are decorative yet restrained. With flowing robes, dignified postures, and finely worked facial expressions that evoke solemnity and wisdom. Butler’s command of bronze is evident in the gentle interplay of light and shadow across the surface, bringing life to the folds, textures, and iconographic elements.

Balancing stylization with detail, this sculpture conveys spiritual gravitas without losing approachability. It serves as both an artistic tribute and a devotional piece, rich in symbolism, historical resonance, and sculptural elegance.
