Hippos by Timothy Rukodzi is a commanding Shona sculpture carved from opal stone. This unique pair captures two giant hippos in a moment of calm alertness and expressive presence. The largest stands at 200cm high, 90cm wide, and 125cm deep, while the second, with its mouth open, measures 165cm high, 90cm wide, and 100cm deep.

Rukodzi sculpts each hippo with bold, rounded forms, true to their natural bulk yet stylised through Shona abstraction. One hippo sits quietly, its head turned slightly to the left as if observing its surroundings. The second opens its mouth, head tilted right, evoking a moment of movement or vocalisation. This subtle asymmetry adds life and balance to the composition, inviting viewers to walk around and engage with the forms from different angles.

The opal stone’s rich green and earthy tones lend the hippos both a grounded quality and a sense of vitality. Smooth, polished surfaces contrast with occasional rough textures, adding depth and a tactile sense of realism. Rukodzi’s craftsmanship honours both the majesty of the animal and the strength of the stone.

Ideal for outdoor display, this monumental duo brings character, humour, and a sculptural presence to a garden or open space, capturing the gentle power and enduring spirit of African wildlife.
