Celebration by Sylvester Mubayi, Lemon Opal Stone, Unique, 34cm high, 53cm wide, 40cm deep
Celebration by Sylvester Mubayi is a distinctive Shona Lemon Opal Stone sculpture depicting two closely connected figures gathered around a shared jug. Measuring 34 cm high, 53 cm wide and 40 cm deep, this unique figurative work uses simplified forms and flowing contours. The piece expressing a strong sense of togetherness, sharing and communal celebration.
Mubayi carves the two figures from a single substantial piece of stone, allowing their bodies to merge naturally into one unified composition. Rather than separating each figure completely, the remaining solid stone continues behind them, providing both a physical and visual connection. Consequently, the sculpture retains a sense of the original stone while the figures appear to emerge organically from its mass.
At the centre of the composition, a jug sits between the two heads, creating a clear focal point. The figures gather closely around it, and its shared position reinforces the themes of companionship and celebration suggested by the title. Moreover, Mubayi avoids unnecessary anatomical detail, instead relying on broad shapes, gentle curves and the relationship between each element to communicate the scene.
This minimal approach gives Celebration a strong sculptural presence. Meanwhile, the natural qualities of Lemon Opal Stone complement the rounded forms and substantial proportions of the work.
Ultimately, Celebration transforms a simple shared moment into a warm expression of unity and human connection. As a unique Sylvester Mubayi sculpture, it represents an engaging example of Zimbabwean Shona stone carving, combining stylised figurative art with the natural beauty and permanence of stone.
