Gazelle Family by Fungai Dodzo, Springstone , Unique, 61cm high by 44cm wide by 21cm deep , sculpture
This piece by Fungai Dodzo is a unique Shona springstone sculpture that depicts a family of four gazelles merged into a single flowing form, symbolising unity and connection. At the top stands the largest gazelle, its elegantly curved horns rising with quiet strength. Beside it, a slightly smaller gazelle without horns nestles close, its smooth lines suggesting gentleness and support.
Beneath them, two smaller gazelles rest, their compact forms tucked neatly into the protective shapes of the adults. The sculptor’s merging of their bodies into one continuous structure reinforces the sense of togetherness, as if each gazelle’s life is interwoven with the others. The springstone’s deep, polished surface reflects light across the curves, while untouched stone at the base provides contrast and a grounding presence.
Dodzo uses subtle variations in contour to distinguish each figure while keeping the composition harmonious. The horns sweep upward in a graceful arc, leading the eye from the grounded base to the sculpture’s peak. This upward movement adds energy and balance, while the close positioning of the heads evokes tenderness.
Gazelle Family blends realism with abstraction, honouring both the beauty of the animal form and the symbolic strength of family bonds. It stands as a powerful reminder of protection, unity, and shared life.
