Deadelus Escaping Lizards by Noah Taylor is a unique patinated brass and copper sculpture measuring 36 cm high, 18 cm wide, and 16 cm deep. The piece blends mythology, surrealism, and whimsy, capturing a moment of precarious balance and escape.

At the centre stands a small boy poised delicately on one foot atop a slender stand. His body is encased in a box-like form, suggesting both protection and confinement. A small metal hat rests on his head, while two handmade brass wings extend from his arms. His arms stretch outward, as if testing flight, his pose frozen between hesitation and lift-off.

Below him, the drama unfolds. Two large green lizards climb determinedly up the stand, their bodies curling and stretching toward the boy. Smaller scaled creatures circle the base, adding to the sense of movement and tension. Their pursuit feels relentless, while the boy’s upward reach evokes defiance and fragile hope.

Taylor’s use of patinated brass and copper gives the work an aged, alchemical quality, half dream, half machine. The interplay of gleaming and oxidised surfaces heightens contrast between human invention and animal instinct. Through humour and mythic symbolism, Daedelus Escaping Lizards explores ambition, fear, and the eternal struggle to rise above one’s earthly bounds.
