Protective Mermaid by Locardia Ndandarika, Sapoline, Unique, 34cm high, 60cm wide, 110cm deep, Tribal, Culture, People, Women, Water Creatures sculpture

Protective Mermaid by Locardia Ndandarika is a unique Shona stone sculpture carved from sapoline stone, measuring 34 cm high by 60 cm wide by 110 cm deep. The work presents a mermaid swimming forward, integrated directly into the natural mass of the stone. The composition feels horizontal and flowing, emphasizing movement across the surface rather than vertical lift.

The figure swims on her front, with her back facing upward as she moves forward. Her arms rest close to her sides, reinforcing a streamlined, controlled motion. Beneath her, the rock rises gently, supporting and guiding the figure as if she moves just above its surface. Her head faces straight ahead, focused and calm, while the tail curves slightly, introducing rhythm and direction to the form.

The carving remains restrained and deliberate. The surface is smoothed throughout, allowing the sculpture to feel unified and tactile. Simple incised details define the head, hair, and fins without overworking the stone. These minimal markings give clarity to the figure while preserving the solidity of the material. The mermaid emerges from the rock rather than sitting apart from it, strengthening the sense of protection suggested by the title.

The stone retains its natural, weathered colouring. Subtle variations in tone move across the surface, enhancing depth and reinforcing the organic quality of the material. Light gathers softly along the curves of the body and tail, while shallow shadows settle into carved lines.

Overall, Protective Mermaid balances figure and stone with quiet confidence. Through controlled carving, gentle movement, and natural finish, the sculpture conveys calm strength, continuity, and a close connection between form and material.
