Iron Stag by Dido Crosby, Metal, Edition of 6, 210cm high by 205cm wide by 101cm deep, Available
Iron Stag by Dido Crosby rises powerfully to a height of 210 centimetres, commanding attention with its proud stance and striking silhouette. Forged from metal and cast in an edition of six, this sculpture captures a stag in profile, legs firmly planted and head lifted toward the sky. He doesn’t merely stand, he calls, as if filling the landscape with sound and presence. His lifted antlers arc upward like branching trees, emphasizing both strength and elegance.
Crosby uses steel not to imitate nature exactly, but to interpret it with energy and intention. The metal surface reflects light in shifting tones, sometimes matte and weathered, other times sharp and gleaming. These varied textures give the stag a living quality, as though muscle, bone, and fur exist beneath the forged material. Because the form remains slightly stylized, viewers feel movement rather than stillness; the sculpture seems caught in a singular moment of defiance, alertness, or declaration.
As one walks around the piece, different angles reveal new lines and balances. The chest pushes forward, the legs brace with tension, and the antlers sweep outward in rhythmic curves. Each viewpoint reinforces the sense that the stag dominates its terrain, whether imagined as a forest clearing, windswept hillside, or open parkland.
Although composed entirely of metal, the sculpture feels deeply connected to nature. It celebrates wildness, dignity, and the raw instinct of animals that live beyond our control. In Iron Stag, Crosby transforms industrial material into a creature that not only inhabits its surroundings but seems ready to claim them.
