History of ‘Freedom’
Nearly 20 years ago, British artists Steve Wood and Clive Morris were the proud creators of ‘Freedom’. Friends for 40+ years they were humorously known as ‘The Twins’. This was due to their similarities to Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito.
This replica of a 1991 Harley-Davidson Fat Boy is the largest sculpture of this kind in the world and represents personal freedom
Created in two UK foundries. Completed in July 2003. ‘Freedom’ was shipped to America. It travelled for one month. Following a 4500-mile journey, it was stationed in Milwaukee.
Clive and Steve filmed the whole event, collating a total of 40 hours of film footage – the idea being to use this footage to make a documentary of the sculpture and its journey.
On their first day, the sculpture reached Ace Café in North London. Furthermore, it was joined by 1,000 motorcycles and simultaneously a police-escorted to Tate Modern. Eventually it was shipped from Southampton to New York. It even appeared on Breakfast TV. The epic journey coincided with Harley-Davidson’s 100th anniversary, taking Clive and Steve to a large rally in Milwaukee coupled with over 250,000 bikes. Resting at Harley-Davidson dealers along their 1,000-mile route. The sculpture was finally placed at Milwaukee State. The House of Harley dealership agreed to look after it until eventually a new home was found.
It resided there until November 2021 – when it was finally brought home to the UK, at the present time it is currently on display and for sale from The Sculpture Park
