Wood Cocoon II by Martyn Barratt, Wood, Unique, 50cm high, 200cm wide, 50cm deep, Furniture, Nature sculpture
Wood Cocoon II by Martyn Barratt is a unique wooden sculpture measuring 50 cm high, 200 cm wide, and 50 cm deep. The piece takes the form of a long, cocoon-shaped bench, blurring the lines between functional furniture and sculptural art.
The cocoon shape curves gently along its length, creating an inviting, organic form. Its smooth, polished surfaces contrast with subtle natural textures in the wood, emphasizing the material’s inherent warmth and character. The bench appears as if it has grown naturally, its flowing lines evoking movement and shelter at the same time.
Barratt’s design balances practicality with artistry. While the sculpture functions as seating, it also commands attention as a sculptural object. The elongated form encourages viewers to engage with it from multiple angles. Its low profile ensures it remains grounded, while the continuous curves give it a sense of lightness and fluidity.
The natural grain and colour variations in the wood enhance the overall aesthetic, drawing the eye along the length of the cocoon. Light reflects differently across the curves, adding subtle depth and emphasizing the craftsmanship involved.
Wood Cocoon II invites interaction. Viewers can walk around it, touch it, or even sit upon it, experiencing the seamless fusion of form, function, and natural material. The piece captures both the elegance of sculptural abstraction and the intimacy of functional design.
