Steve Boss, Flanders Field, Bronze, Open, 32cm high, 9cm wide, 5cm deep, Floral, Flower, Poppy, Sculpture
This piece presents two red poppies mounted against a slender sheet of metal. Together, they create a quiet but powerful contrast.
First, one poppy rises tall and upright. Its stem stretches confidently upward, while its petals open and fold gently around the flower head. In contrast, the second poppy sits much lower. It bends forward, wilted and fragile, suggesting loss and vulnerability. Nearby, a single fallen poppy leaf rests close to the base, reinforcing the sense of transience.
Although compact in scale, the sculpture carries strong emotional weight. Boss smooths the bronze surface while keeping the forms stylised. This balance allows the flowers to remain instantly recognisable without becoming overly detailed. The restrained modelling suits the subject matter and keeps the focus on symbolism rather than realism.
Finally, carefully applied colour brings the work to life. The red of the poppies stands out clearly against the darker metal, guiding the viewer’s eye from the fallen bloom to the standing flower. Overall, Flanders Field captures remembrance, resilience, and quiet reflection through simple yet deliberate sculptural choices.
