Agapanthus by Jenny Pickford, Forged Steel & Blown Glass, 5 metres high, Unique
A five-metre agapanthus rises above the landscape, its form inspired by the elegant, radiating structure of the agapanthus flower. Delicate glass blooms are suspended on forged steel stems, echoing the natural burst of florets that crown each stalk. The piece captures light, movement, and botanical rhythm at a monumental scale, transforming an outdoor space into something both sculptural and organic.
This is not a decorative object but a vertical focal point intended to redefine a garden or architectural setting. Rooted in the language of a flower yet elevated beyond representation, the sculpture draws on the agapanthus’ distinctive spherical bloom—its clustered petals translated into individually blown glass elements that suggest growth, expansion, and seasonal vitality. The steel structure gives it permanence and presence, while the glass introduces light, colour, and a sense of life that shifts throughout the year. From a distance, it reads as a bold floral silhouette rising from the Earth; up close, it reveals intricate handcrafted detail within each “petal.”
This dual experience is what makes it particularly suited to serious private collections, estates, and public installations, where both impact and intimacy are valued.
The sculpture is designed for large gardens or landscaped grounds, entrance approaches, and long sightlines, as well as open spaces where its vertical scale can be fully appreciated. Like a flowering plant emerging from the earth, it is best experienced from 10–30 metres away to take in the full bloom-like silhouette, then approached gradually to discover the finer glass details that mimic the delicacy of real petals.
Hand-forged steel is paired with individually blown glass elements, each one unique and arranged to suggest the natural variation found in living flowers. These glass forms catch and refract light differently throughout the day, evoking the way petals respond to sun and weather. As conditions change, the sculpture subtly shifts in appearance, much like a flower moving through its seasonal cycle. It is built for outdoor installation with long-term durability in mind.
