Supporting My Family by Tinei Mashaya, Springstone, Unique, 150cm high by 37cm wide by 44cm deep, Body, Children, Family, Figurative, People, People, Black, Performing Arts sculpture
This piece by Tinei Mashaya is a striking Shona Springstone sculpture that speaks to strength, unity, and care. This unique work features four abstract figures, each carefully balanced atop the other’s shoulders to create a single towering column of support.
The figures are minimalistic but full of feeling. Their smooth forms flow into one another, yet each figure remains distinct. At the base, the lowest figure kneels down, carrying the weight of all above. This foundation symbolizes resilience and responsibility. Above, each figure lifts the next, showing how family and community lean on one another for strength.
The dark, polished Springstone has a deep, natural sheen. Light dances over its curves, bringing out the subtle lines that define each figure’s head, arms, and shoulders. The sculpture feels alive, solid yet flowing, capturing the unspoken bond of generations supporting each other.
From every angle, the piece offers a new perspective. Viewed head-on, the tower of figures appears strong and balanced. From the side, the gentle curves reveal how each figure’s pose adapts to hold the next. This creates a sense of motion and unity.
Tinei Mashaya’s work is both simple and powerful. Supporting My Family shows how strength is not only found in the individual but also in the connection between each member of a family. It celebrates trust, sacrifice, and the quiet courage to lift others up.
