Kissing the Wind by Lucknos Chingwru, Springstone, Unique, 40cm high, 35cm wide, 15cm deep
Kissing the Wind by Lucknos Chingwru is an expressive Shona Springstone sculpture that captures a fleeting moment of freedom, movement and connection with the natural world. Measuring 40 cm high, 35 cm wide and 15 cm deep, this unique figurative sculpture presents an upward-facing head with closed eyes and gently pursed lips, creating a peaceful yet distinctive expression.
The figure’s elongated neck rises directly from the base, giving the composition a graceful vertical line. From here, the face turns upwards, lifting the chin and directing the viewer’s attention towards the softly pursed lips. Consequently, the pose appears to capture the sensation suggested by the title, as though the figure has raised their face to feel and embrace the passing wind.
Moreover, Chingwru creates a dramatic contrast between the refined face and the rugged treatment of the hair. The head and neck feature a smooth, polished finish that emphasises the deep black character of Springstone and the flowing contours of the figure. Meanwhile, the hair projects widely behind the head as a substantial area of raw, unpolished stone.
This textured section introduces a more natural, energetic quality to the composition. Its irregular surface contrasts strongly with the controlled simplicity of the facial features, while its broad shape gives the sculpture a compelling silhouette. Furthermore, the difference between polished and unpolished stone celebrates the versatility and natural character of the material.
Ultimately, Kissing the Wind combines stillness with an underlying sense of movement. As a unique Lucknos Chingwru sculpture, it offers an engaging example of contemporary Zimbabwean Shona stone carving, balancing expressive figurative sculpture with the raw beauty of natural Springstone.
