These Great Danes are in the style of the favourite hunting dogs of the 26th Lord Kingsale, John de Courcy b.1717. John is described as being addicted to hunting and the pleasures of the chase and lived at Old Head Castle at Kingsale, County Cork.
They were also of use to him on 4 March 1760, when the sons-in-law of the late Lord made a night attack on his house at Kingsale and he was obliged to escape by dropping from a back bedroom window. John died on 3 March 1776 and was buried at Ringrone. His beloved hounds were buried at the Old Head Castle.
