Hermit Crab by Paul Wells, Copper, Unique, 85cm high by 190cm wide by 130cm deep, Animals and Birds, Water Creatures sculpture

This piece by Paul Wells is a unique abstract sculpture crafted from copper, measuring 85 cm high by 190 cm wide by 130 cm deep. The piece captures a powerful moment of emergence, as the crab appears to move outward from its shell and into open space.

The crab stands low and wide. Its large claws spread forward with confidence. At the same time, its legs stretch out beneath the body, anchoring the form firmly to the ground. Above them, small beady eyes push forward and scan the surroundings, giving the sculpture a sense of alert awareness and quiet tension.

Wells constructs the form from cut sheets of copper. He welds each section together with clear intention. Layers overlap and intersect, building volume through structure rather than solid mass. As a result, the surface feels energetic and alive. Lumps and bumps travel across the metal, adding texture and movement. These marks catch the light and break up the form.

The copper carries a rich, warm colouring throughout. Subtle variations appear across the surface as light moves over it. Overall, the sculpture feels bold and dynamic, combining abstraction with a strong, recognisable presence.
