Michek Nyamasoka, Unity, Springstone, Avocado, Serpentine, 41cm high, 38cm wide, 8cm deep
Unity is a unique Shona stone sculpture by artist Michek Nyamapsoka, hand-carved in a striking combination of Springstone, Avocado stone and Serpentine. Measuring 41 cm high, this elegant table-top sculpture combines a sweeping abstract curve with three beautifully formed stone spheres.
The three spheres sit within and around the flowing sculptural form, creating a strong sense of connection and togetherness. They might be interpreted as three people, perhaps representing a family unit, close friends or individuals brought together by a shared bond. The title Unity reinforces this idea while leaving the meaning open to personal interpretation.
The graceful curve appears to embrace and protect the rounded forms, giving the sculpture a feeling of harmony, closeness and balance. Contrasting shapes are particularly effective: the smooth, perfectly rounded spheres sit against the elongated, organic sweep of the surrounding stone, creating an engaging composition from every angle.
Nyamapsoka’s use of different stones introduces further contrasts in natural colour, markings and texture. Carefully polished surfaces reveal the individual character of the Springstone, Avocado stone and Serpentine while uniting them within a single composition.
Rooted in Zimbabwe’s renowned Shona stone-carving tradition, Unity is a contemporary and highly symbolic sculpture celebrating connection, family and the relationships that bring people together.
