Tulip Torso by Sean Crampton, Phosphor Bronze, Artist’s copy, edition of 6, 101cm high, 42cm wide, 40 deep
Tulip Torso by Sean Crampton is a striking Phosphor Bronze sculpture that transforms the female figure through surreal abstraction and dramatic separation of form. An Artist’s Copy from an edition of 6, the sculpture measures 101 cm high, 42 cm wide and 40 cm deep, giving its crouching figure a substantial presence despite the compact nature of the pose.
Crampton strips away several conventional features, leaving the figure without a face, arms or feet. Instead, he concentrates attention on the strongly defined torso, hips and long spiralling hair. Consequently, the sculpture remains distinctly figurative while moving beyond a traditional representation of the human body.
Most notably, a pronounced division runs vertically through the centre of the figure. The two halves curve slightly outwards from one another, opening the body and creating a dramatic area of negative space. However, two slender strands cross this divide, visually connecting the separated forms and introducing a delicate contrast to the heavier bronze structure.
Moreover, a rounded form rests within the lower abdomen, providing another focal point within the open composition. Its smooth volume contrasts with the elongated split and reinforces the sculpture’s surreal character. Meanwhile, the crouched posture keeps the figure grounded, while the flowing hair introduces movement and extends the composition upwards.
The rich bronze colouring further accentuates the curves, recesses and changing surfaces of the work. As light moves across the Phosphor Bronze, it emphasises both the solidity of the figure and the open spaces within it.
Ultimately, Tulip Torso combines the female form with fragmentation, movement and imaginative abstraction. This Sean Crampton bronze sculpture offers a compelling example of surreal figurative art, balancing recognisable anatomy with an unconventional and highly sculptural composition.
