Timeless by John Chipiri, Serpentine stone, Unique, 91cm high, 26cm wide, 25cm deep
Timeless by John Chipiri is an elegant Shona Serpentine stone sculpture that explores rhythm, continuity and upward movement through a carefully balanced abstract form. Measuring 91 cm high, 26 cm wide and 25 cm deep, this unique sculpture rises in a slender, cone-shaped composition, combining the strength of solid stone with a surprising sense of openness and fluidity.
Beginning from a substantial base, the sculpture separates into individual strands that sweep upwards and around one another. Chipiri arranges these forms in an even spiralling rhythm, allowing the composition to narrow progressively as it rises. Consequently, the eye follows the continuous circular movement towards the sculpture’s defined pointed tip.
Moreover, the carefully spaced strands create a series of openings throughout the composition. Light passes through these gaps, making negative space an essential part of the sculpture rather than simply an area surrounding it. As a result, the relationship between solid stone, light and shadow continually changes as the viewer moves around the work.
Despite the substantial character of Serpentine stone, the open structure gives Timeless an unexpected visual lightness. Meanwhile, the repeated curves create harmony and balance, while the gradual taper from the broad base to the narrow summit strengthens its upward momentum. The spiral formation also suggests ideas of continuity, cycles and progression, complementing the contemplative nature of the title.
Ultimately, Timeless transforms stone into a refined study of movement and repetition. As a unique John Chipiri sculpture, it combines contemporary abstraction with the distinctive craftsmanship of Zimbabwean Shona stone carving, creating an engaging focal point for a modern interior, gallery or collection of contemporary African sculpture.
