Three Green Drums by Ian Dawson, Plastic, Unique, 125cm high by 230cm wide by 110cm deep, Abstract, Other Sculpture

Three Green Drums by Ian Dawson transforms ordinary industrial plastic barrels into a striking sculptural presence. Rather than presenting the drums as found objects, Dawson melts and reshapes them into an unexpected abstract form. Their glossy green surfaces twist and slump with intention, as if the artist has caught them at the moment they are collapsing or expanding. The result feels alive, as though these once rigid containers have developed their own physical language.

Standing approximately 125 cm high, stretching 230 cm wide, and reaching 110 cm deep, the sculpture occupies space with bold volume. Yet its altered structure shifts attention away from utility and toward fluidity. Dawson encourages the viewer to reconsider the nature of industrial materials. Instead of seeing them as uniform and functional, he reveals their potential for expressive movement. The softened forms suggest organic growth, perhaps echoing plants, geological formations, or biological tissue.

Moreover, the work’s vivid green colour intensifies its impact. It bridges the familiar world of commercial plastics and the natural environment it often disrupts. Because of this contrast, Three Green Drums sparks tension, it looks synthetic yet evokes something living. This dialogue deepens as the viewer approaches the sculpture and notices folds, warps, and bulges that appear surprisingly tactile.

When Dawson presented sculptures from this series at Sculpture by the Sea in Sydney in 2002, they challenged how outdoor public art could engage with both material waste and environmental concerns. By reshaping discarded plastic into a powerful visual form, he transforms industrial residue into contemporary abstract sculpture, inviting reflection and provoking curiosity.
