Embrace is a unique, hand-carved abstract Shona sculpture by Zimbabwean artist Kufa McDonald. Sculpted from avocado stone, the work rises in an elegant, flame-like form, with flowing curves that twist and sweep around one another to create a strong sense of movement and connection.
The sculpture’s intertwined composition evokes the gesture of an embrace, with its rounded forms appearing to reach towards, surround and support one another. This continuous swirling movement gives the piece a feeling of warmth, unity and closeness, while its upward-reaching silhouette introduces an uplifting sense of energy.
Carved entirely by hand, Embrace combines the natural beauty of avocado stone with the fluid, organic qualities associated with Zimbabwean Shona sculpture. The carefully worked surfaces accentuate the curves of the composition, while natural variations within the stone ensure that the sculpture has its own individual character.
Standing 82 cm high, Embrace is a substantial table-top sculpture with a tall, slender profile. Its vertical proportions make it particularly striking when displayed on a pedestal, console or other raised surface, where the sculptural form can be appreciated from different viewpoints.
As a unique original work rather than an edition, Embrace brings together natural stone, traditional hand-carving and contemporary abstraction in an expressive sculpture centred on ideas of connection, unity and human affection.
Delivery & Installation
The Sculpture Park will be in contact after purchase to arrange a delivery date. Delivery will require at least 1 person, which will be provided by The Sculpture Park wherever possible. We can provide an installation service upon request, email Sian at sian@thesculpturepark.com to discuss details. Delivery and installation will be provided by The Sculpture Park for mainland Great Britain, excluding the Channel Islands, Scottish Highlands and Republic of Ireland. A mainland courier company will handle any onward shipping.
