Spirit of the Forest by Jim Unsworth, Steel, Unique, 166cm high by 74cm wide by 25cm deep, Abstract sculpture
Spirit of the Forest by Jim Unsworth is a unique abstract steel sculpture, measuring 166 cm high, 74 cm wide, and 25 cm deep. The sculpture combines a variety of metal pieces, arranged to create a dynamic forest-inspired scene.
The composition divides visually into background and foreground elements. In the background, green-painted steel shapes evoke the dense canopy and foliage of a forest. These overlapping forms suggest depth and create a sense of layered vegetation. In contrast, the foreground features white and yellow pieces, standing out boldly against the green. This colour contrast draws the eye forward, emphasizing the spatial interplay between near and far.
Unsworth arranges the metal elements with careful attention to movement and rhythm. Curves, angles, and intersecting lines guide the viewer’s gaze across the sculpture. The irregular shapes mimic the organic forms found in nature, while the geometric edges remind viewers of the industrial material. Additionally, the varying thicknesses of steel introduce subtle shadows, adding dimensionality to the piece.
The combination of colour, form, and arrangement produces a sense of energy and vitality, as if the forest itself is alive. The sculpture invites viewers to explore both its abstract shapes and the natural inspiration behind them. Through Spirit of the Forest, Unsworth transforms steel into a vibrant, expressive landscape, balancing abstraction with references to nature.
